Managing the Composting Process

18 Jul 2011 1:36 PM - A Better Way To Go

The management of the contents of your waterless toilet is a personal choice. Much depends on the physical location of your toilet and how often it is used.
For example, if you have installed a waterless toilet in your weekender for use by 2-3 people, you will want to empty the toilet of solids and turn off the power when you leave.  Other installations are full time use and in these situations, bin rotation is recommended. Simply cap the full bin and remove to the garage or shed. With 3 bins, the rotation process may take some months. During this time, the contents are reducing and beginning to compost. You can add some soil at this stage to fast track things along. At some point, the first bin will be required for recommissioning in the toilet. What then do you do with your biodegradable bag and its contents? Because the contents will take at least 12 months to fully compost, the installation of a compost bin, like the eBin, is a perfect solution. It is sturdy, has no outfall, features an over hanging lid for rain runoff and includes an air vent under the lid overhang for aerobic composting. Simply empty the full bin, bag and all, into the eBin and leave for 12 months or more and avoid using the compost for food crops. Click here for more info. eBin Compost Bin

Remember to allow at least 12 months for composting to complete.

There are also several options for the disposal of the urine that is diverted. If you have a grey water treatment system, then urine can be plumbed into this. Alternatively, the urine can be plumbed directly into a holding tank, mixed with tap or tank water and used as a nitrogen rich fertiliser for the garden. (Not in Victoria.) The Separett Ejektertank is designed specifically for this purpose and is an economical solution that is easy to install and maintain. No power is required because it employs water pressure through a venturi nozzle to syphon 1 part urine to 8 parts water. Click here for more information. Separett Ejektortank
